Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Ministry of Railways have released the detailed Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) No. 04/2026 for recruitment to various posts of Junior Engineer (JE) and Depot Material Superintendent (DMS). A total of 3993 vacancies have been notified across different railway zones and production units.
Online applications started on 14 August 2026 and will remain open till 13 September 2026 (23:59 hours). Candidates who have completed the required three-year Diploma in Engineering (or equivalent as specified) in the relevant discipline can apply. Higher qualifications such as BE/B.Tech in the same discipline are also acceptable where permitted.
The posts carry Pay Level-6 of the 7th CPC with initial basic pay of ₹35,400. Selection will be through Computer Based Tests followed by Document Verification and Medical Examination. Out of the ₹500 fee, ₹400 will be refunded (after deducting bank charges) to candidates who appear in the 1st Stage CBT. The full ₹250 fee paid by concession categories will be refunded on appearing in CBT-1. Fee can be paid online through the prescribed modes. Modification of application (except Create an Account details and chosen RRB) requires payment of ₹250 (non-refundable) during the correction window.

Age relaxation is applicable as per Railway rules for SC/ST (5 years), OBC-NCL (3 years), PwBD (10–15 years depending on category), Ex-Servicemen, Railway employees, and certain other categories. Candidates must check the detailed age relaxation table in the official notification.

Educational Qualification
Candidates must possess the prescribed educational/technical qualifications on or before the closing date of application (13 September 2026). Those awaiting final results are not eligible.
The basic requirement for most posts is a three-year Diploma in Engineering in the relevant discipline (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or combination of sub-streams) from a recognised University/Institute. Higher qualifications such as BE/B.Tech in the same discipline are accepted in lieu of Diploma for many posts.
Post-wise specific qualifications, medical standards and suitability for PwBD are given in Annexure-A of the official notification. Candidates must carefully match their qualification with the post parameters before applying.
Selection Process
The recruitment process consists of the following stages:
- 1st Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-1) – Screening nature
- 2nd Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-2)
- Document Verification
- Medical Examination
Shortlisting for Document Verification is done RRB-wise at the ratio of 1:1 of the vacancies based on merit in CBT. Normalisation of marks will be applied if exams are held in multiple shifts.
Exam Pattern
1st Stage CBT (Common for all posts)
- Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for eligible scribe candidates)
- Number of Questions: 100
- Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark for every wrong answer
2nd Stage CBT
- Number of Questions: 150
- Subjects generally include General Awareness, Physics & Chemistry, Basics of Computers and Applications, Basics of Environment and Pollution Control, and Technical abilities related to the post.
